A thank you email to my students

just sent this to them as i’ve submitted all their grades

Hi,
Hope all of you are well. I’ve submitted your final grades for our class to Self Service. I’m not sure how long it may take for them to show via your unofficial transcript but give it about 24 hours. I’ve also emailed each of you your individual grade so you know that and can find it in your email.

It was a good first run of this course. I didn’t get a chance to share with you how anxious I was to teach this course, something I haven’t done before and a topic I haven’t done in such a way, but one that is so much a part of my everyday life and so personal for me too. It was exciting and scary for me but each of you doing the work and bringing questions and thoughtful responses helped to guide me to make the class with you what it became for all of us.

Thanks to each of you for your contributions and honesty during these past 4 weeks. You’ve each worked really hard and I hope you are proud of what you have accomplished and the knowledge we have created and shared together.

Have a good summer!

I’m sad the teaching is over for the next 7 weeks. But i’m also relieved. I have a LOT of healing to do. This class wore me out. having to teach 3x a week for 3 hours each session that we are still fighting to be seen as HUMAN and not equal to (white) men is something that can break one’s spirit. But it was good to take a few moments to meditate and ground myself each morning before doing this. it changed my morning ritual.

this summer my heart broke and my community is helping me put all those pieces back together, but i’ve had some amazing triumphs. my best friend of 12 years is coming tomorrow to be w/me and i haven’t seen her in 3d in 4 years. when i think of the amazing reunion we are going to have tomorrow it makes me hold my hand to my chest.

A playlist from class today w/guest @BlackAmazon

yeah i’mma let you take a moment to let your jealousy subside b/c we spent our morning w/@BlackAmazon today….

Ok, she led us through convos on love, digital archiving of WOC work online, etc. it was fabulous. it was thoughtful, liberating, i think it was really what the women in my class needed for this long weekend (none of the fellas showed up for class today!).

They were asked to pick a song from their audio players they have that speaks to their ideas of love, that they love, etc. here’s what they came up with (including my own).

Student 1: Tupac “Do For Love”

Student 2: Maxwell “This Women’s Work”

Student 3: Buju Banton “Wanna Be Loved”

Student 4: Bob Marley “Waiting in Vain”

Student 5: Mya “Falling”

Professor: Big Freedia “Feelin Myself”

Student 6: JLo ft. Fat Joe “Hold You Down”

Imma post the vids to the songs so you can see and hear how dope my students are (and I’ll also try to find lyrics for each song too!)
